What are the types of Air Compressors?

Air compressor is a mechanical device that increases the air pressure by reducing the volume.  Over the years, many types of air compressors have been invented to compress the air and pressurize. They have become a necessary appliance for every construction site as they are the source of power for electric tools or  instrumentations in offshore.

Types of Air Compressors:

A wide variety of air compressors has been invented each with their own exceptional properties and function. They are classified based on their internal mechanism and also on the purpose that they are used for. The two types of air compressors are explained below:

· Positive Displacement Compressors:

In positive displacement compressors, the air is trapped into a chamber and compresses the chamber by reducing the volume which eventually increases air pressure. The two types of positive displacement compressors are described below:

1. Rotary Screw Compressor:

These are the most common type of air compressors used in large-sized industries. They have gained popularity because of their low cost and maintenance. There oil free or oil injected screw air compressors and they can be driven by either electrical motors or diesel engine depending on your preference  . These compressors have two internal rotors that run in the opposite directions. The pressure in these compressors is increased by trapping the air in between the two opposite rotors

Reciprocating Compressor:

These compressors are designed for smaller projects like garages and home construction sites. They need oil for lubrication and for smooth movement of parts. They cannot bear the continuous load. They function with the help of pistons present inside a cylinder which compress the air and increase the pressure. They come in both single and multi-stage variations. Single-stage is used for smaller projects whereas multi-stage is used for larger sites where more power is required.

Dynamic Displacement Compressors:

Dynamic displacement air compressors are used on a very large scale. The power in this compressor is created by rapid rotation of the blades which bring in the air and then the air is constrained which eventually increases the pressure. The two types of dynamic displacement compressors are described below:

1. Centrifugal Compressor:

A centrifugal compressor is a type of dynamic compressor with a radial design. Unlike displacement compressors that work at a constant flow, dynamic compressors work at a constant pressure and the performance is affected by external conditions such as inlet temperatures. These compressors undergo multi-stage compression stages by using the diffusers to build up the energy and compress the external air. They can produce a great amount of energy even in small machines because of their multi-stage compressor phase. They are low maintenance than other compressors and are mostly the oil-free air compressor. The horsepower in this compressor can reach up to 1000 hp.
